Shar's Drums

All the drums have been cleansed and blessed with frankincense

1. Scribbly Gum Blessings

Size/Type Hoop: 18” Ash

Skin: Roo Skin

This baby came to me whilst at a waterfall. My intention was to make the drum there but it ended up being rather wet and cold. My meditation kept bringing me back to the water but also felt the need to be grounded - so i felt to be by the side of a creek.

I have forever been fascinated by the markings on Scribbly Gum trees and i felt really drawn to using that as inspiration for this drum. I am hoping to make some marks on the face of the drum to represent the scribbles but i’ll try it on a scrap piece of hide first.

I researched how the marks are made by the O Scribula moth/worm and i found a beautiful significance in their path making in order to cause the production of the very cells they require to sustain them during the transformation process inside the chrysalis. Reminding us that sometimes we need to set things in motion, do the groundwork, in order for us to transform. According to the CSIRO this genus of moth hails back to the super continent Gondwana.

Moths are symbols of transformation, life and death. They are drawn to the light which can sometimes result in danger, a reminder to be cautious when being drawn to the bright and shiny.

Moth has Luna connections (apt for being made on a supermoon) and is connected to intuition and insight.

The skin is Roo - Always moving forward, adaptable, strong sense of community and intuitive. They have a keen sense of awareness in their environment. A strong connection to this sacred land.

The hoop is an 18” Ash - the Ash tree is considered the World tree. It brings us into connection with all that is. By knowing ourselves we will know the universe. Strength, endurance and can help unlock the door to wisdom within us. (Spirit Drum)

The card that i pulled was the Choice card. Reminding us that everything learned or experienced was borne of choice - yours or another’s. Choice creates reality, cause and effect, free will and self determination.

I specifically chose this stick for the handle as the markings on it also reminded me of the scribbly gum. The cord has been wrapped in brown artificial sinew and created in the shape of a tree - an homage again to the scribbly gum.

As always i am deeply grateful for the privilege to create these sacred objects on this sacred, indigenous land.

2. Sacred Jasper

Size: 20 inch

Animal Connection: NA

Skin: Deer Skin

Adornments: Willow ring, Jasper stone,

Colour/Patterning: White/tan

Meaning: The journey for this drum focussed entirely on having the courage to forge your own path. There was a very clear message that although there may be a historical ‘way’ of doing something, there is always room for innovation. Honour those who have gone before but do not be afraid to put your own mark on something. Whilst making this baby there were a few breaks that occurred - these symbolise to me the breaking free of old systems and creating a new path. Also, not letting difficulties or mishaps getting in the way of your purpose. The stone is Picture Jasper which is has been historically considered a sacred stone. They were known as rain bringers, nurturers, healers and stones of courage. It has a deep connection to the earth and is useful in shamanic journeying. It also encourages initiative. This baby feels really good and the sound is stunning with a powerful resonance.

3. Blessings of Ray

16inch
Roo skin
When i sat to begin my process Sting Ray entered my mind. It was then echoed in the background creating a beautiful synchronicity.

The drum meditation began in a waterhole. As i dove into the water i found myself looking down from an aerial viewpoint at an island surrounded by a reef which seemed to be completely enclosed with bioluminescence - hence the blue ring in the centre of the drum. I came to be standing in hip high water surrounded by these incredible sting rays. They were everywhere. I felt such a feeling a peace within my entire being. I could feel the water swirling around my legs and looked down to find a plethora of fish rushing around. I came to understand that they were cleaning my legs. I continued to feel such a beautiful state of deep serenity.

Sting rays are a symbol of adaptability. They are calm and focussed and of course are connected to water - a symbol of our emotional bodies. They remind us to spend time really getting know ourselves, doing the work.

The structure of the back is a reminder that everything is interconnected and that it is important in life to ask for help, it is a sign of strength to lean on your community not a sign of weakness.

The card i pulled was the Seven of Water - representing surrender, trust, peace and knowing. It reminds us to let go and surrender to the flow. It is time to take a breath and exhale. (Tarot of Gaia)

The skin is Roo reminding us to move forward, strength, awareness and our ability to endure struggle.

This baby will be hung at @galleryone88finearts on Thursday as part of the Sacred Objects exhibition. Price is $555

4. Artemis, Ground into your purpose
18” Rosewood Hoop
Dyed Roo Skin
She is a dark/bright pink, the hoop is made of Rosewood and the handle is a piece of driftwood.

She is bolder and more powerful than i imagined - which makes sense as the receiver will need something very powerful. She has an incredible sound, lots of reverb.

Artemis is her deity, protector of the maiden, animals, huntress, childbirth.

Made on the full moon. Her message is to ground into your purpose. Keep coming back to your intention. Hestia came through in the meditation. Witches, we all play a vital role in our community. Juniper Berry. Rebirth. Spider medicine.
5. Reflection Drum

This baby is 20” Rosewood hoop, Goat skin dyed in Aubergine synthetic dye.

Whilst this drum was birthed last night, the process began last Saturday evening. I cut the face out when i prepped the skin for extra cord for the drum workshop last weekend.

Goat are surefooted, strong creatures. They are very adept at travelling rocky terrain, & remind us to maintain our balance. They are independent, determined & playful.

Rosewood symbolises a kind open heart. It helps to balance our spiritual & mental bodies. The red of rosewood sits at the core of the tree & as such rosewood assists us in getting to the heart of things. (Spiritdrum.com)

The colour Violet encourages introspection. The combination of red & blue to create violet represents the balance of physical & spiritual energies. It expands our awareness & imagination. It is powerful, encourages creativity & sensitivity.

I pulled the King of Wands card: Wisdom & kindness. He encourages listening so that you will learn, & when you learn you will love. He has high standards & leads by example. He asks us to see people as whole beings & to appreciate all their qualities. Quiet the mind, the heart, & listen.

This drum is asking us to reflect on how far we have come. To turn the gaze within & see ourselves as whole human beings. Astrologically there has been a huge shift with Pluto moving into Aquarius, then followed by the Full moon. Consider how you are coming into your power.

When we are in the trenches it can be hard to see the progress we have made. It is time to harvest your crops - what seeds of growth have you planted? The Full moon signifies illumination.

The back design is reflective of the interconnectedness of everything, the rings are our internal & external worlds. The cross of course representing the directions & is a sacred symbol.

This baby will be available next week when she is fully dry. @galleryone88finearts online shop, etsy or DM me. $999

6. Solar Drum
19” Pine Hoop
Turmeric, Paprika & Coffee dyed Roo skin
This drum is a large roo (19”). It was soaked in Turmeric & then a quick Paprika bath to deepen the colour. There is also a small amount of coffee bean used to colour the wrap of the handle. This drum was rather insistent that it be birthed - eager to enter the world to do its work.

This drum is an homage to the early pre-christian drums, in particular - egyptian, sumerian, greek, indian - & is connected to the solar plexus.

The solar plexus is where your self-confidence & power is created. It creates your sense of purpose. It is connected to fire energy & the sun.
Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory. It has powerful anti-oxidants & is renowned as a natural healer. It is considered auspicious, sacred, & worn as an amulet to protect against evil spirits.

Paprika is sweet yet spicy, smokey & deep orange-red in colour. It is earthy & masculine & is considered to have healing properties. It enhances energy.

Coffee bean symbolises hard work, connection, & peace.

The cards that came through for this drum were King of Water (calm, contemplative, balanced critical & emotional thinker), 10 of earth (harmony in life, authenticity, reward) & Destiny (embrace your destiny, purpose, seek answers) - you can google the Dreams of Gaia for a full card explanation.

This drum is meant to aid the journey in finding & following your human & divine purpose. Working with it will help balance & restore energies. It feels strong in energy & power & has a deep resonant sound. It is rather light for a large drum which offers endurance. This drum has a masculine feel to it but is not only meant for men to work with - we all contain both masculine and feminine energies, each serving their own purpose.

Black cockatoo came to greet me & called to me this morning as i was photographing the drum. Black cockatoo represents the power of spirit in your life - a strengthening of your own spiritual power. Black cockatoo are liberating, creative & representative of the ancestors. They also are known to utilise drumming when courting their partners.
