ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
ONE88 present the latest solo exhibition by artist, Shirley Peters and her creative exploration of the effects of the deluge that impacted the local environment over the past year.
EXHIBITION & ARTIST STATEMENT
I live and paint at Mulgoa, up in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. My backyard includes two acres of untouched bushland, which has a small stream, fed by our beautiful, peaceful dam. When it's dry, the dam empties and the waters vanish. It had been 5 years since the annual waterfall was normal. Local showers did not exist. Rain that fell in Sydney missed the western areas. Tank loads of water were purchased for our household use.
2020 was different. It rained.
My backyard was transformed into flooding cascades. The dam filled, then overflowed. The water rushed down from the nearby tracks, and our bushland was awash with torrential rain. Every rock held back a dam, between the rocks there were waterfalls.
The good rain continued throughout the year. The garden has thrived, and our dam has remained full! The 2021 year has also been well served. The bushland has fresh green foliage, and the native grasses are growing huge.
So I have called my latest work "Abundant Waters".
My painting focus was shifted from general plein air views to this local phenomena: the wet lands in my backyard. The flowing waterfalls in the Blue Mountains were also deserving of painting, and even though they rarely fail to impress, they look especially good after bountiful rain.
